Washington Irving, 1783-1859, lodged in the Alhambra in 1829, and wrote his highly romanticised "Tales of the Alhambra" as a result. In so doing, he set in motion the romantic movement's enduring love affair with Granada but also, probably, the start of the slow restoration of the palace.
