Washington Irving Illustration - The Adventure Of The Mason - Illustrations

" 'Now,' said the priest, 'you must help me to bring forth the bodies that are to be buried in this vault.' "
An illustration from the 1851 edition of "The Alhambra", written by Washington Irving and illustrated by Felix O. C. Darley, published by George P. Putnam, New York. Washington Irving, 1783-1859, lodged in the Alhambra in 1829, and wrote his highly romanticised "Tales of the Alhambra" as a result. In so doing, he set in motion the romantic movement's enduring love affair with Granada but also, probably, the start of the slow restoration of the palace.
