![]() | Burgos - J.Sima An illustration from the book "The Spanish Journey" written by Julius Meier-Graefe and illustrated by J. Sima, published by Jonathan Cape, London, 1926. Meier-Graefe, the eminent art critic, wrote his book in the early 1900s and it caused a sensation. He went to Spain to study Velasquez, the idol of contemporary scholars, found him a painter with a "mean soul" and instead discovered El Greco and was the first outside Spain to proclaim him as one of the greatest masters of all time.
