Montserrat - Surroundings - Karel Capek

"...queer oval hills, so arranged as to look like ruffled tresses through which a huge comb has been passed. Or rather, they look as if they were still marked by the furrowed imprint of fingers which created this land. From the summit of Montserrat you can see the imprint of the divine thumbs which neaded this warm, russet region with a special creative zest."
An illustration from the book "Letters From Spain" written and illustrated by Karel Capek, translated by Paul Selver, published by George Bles, London, 1931. Capek, (1890-1938), the Czech writer best known for his plays, wrote a number of travel books in an amused and urbane style which suffused his accompanying drawings as well. He invented the word 'robot'.
