 | Santiago De Compostela - Cathedral. Portico De La Gloria - O. Jewitt An illustration for the book "Some Account Of Gothic Architecture In Spain" written by George Edmund Street and illustrated by O Jewitt, published by John Murray, London, 1865. G. E. Street, 1824-81, was an eminent gothic revival architect. His best known building is the Law Courts in The Strand, London. This book helped fill a void in architectural studies at that time. "Seeing, then, how complete is the ignorance which up to the present time we have laboured under, as to the true history and nature of Gothic architecture in Spain, I commit this volume to the reader with a fair trust that what has been an occupation of all my leasure moments for the last two or three years, - a work of not only much labour at home, but of considerable labour also in long journeys taken year after year for this object alone, - will not be found an unwelcome addition to the literature of Christian art." The book is profusely illustrated and also contains many detailed ground plans. Number of Votes: 6 Rating: 8.83 Rate this image Comments: 0 Write a comment |
