“Bolero” (Ravel) danced by Pilar López and Roberto Ximenez. Folklore Español – one of a series of Pilar López' Spanish Dancers on cards issued by Editorial Artigas of Barcelona in their “Laietana” collection. Pilar López (04.06.1912 – 25 03.2008) was a renowned flamenco dancer and, more importantly, choreographer. She danced in the company of her elder sister Encarnación “La Argentinita” the prime force in fusing flamenco, traditional, popular and clasical music and, though always controvercial, these efforts dragged dance out of marginal cafés into the legitimate theatre. In 1936, at the outbreak of the civil war, they both fled and settled in New York where they had much success. Their most famous production was “El Café De Chinitas” using the poetry of Lorca and a set by Salvador Dali. On the sudden death of her sister in 1945, she retired but, returning to Madrid, was persuaded to create her own company – The Pilar López Spanish Ballet – which she ran until 1973.
